Listen to Obituary

Spring, 2020 – March 26, 2026

The City of Cayce House of Cats (CHOC) lost one of its members, Suggs, on March 26, 2026. He was almost 6 years old and was an alumnus of the Suggs and Kelly (S&K) Feral Colony.

Suggs was pre-departed by his brother, Tom Thumb, of the S&K Colony. He is survived by his mother, Hissy Mama, as well as his sisters Ernestine and Gumby – still members of the S&K Colony. Suggs also leaves behind the members of the CHOC household – especially his “bonk” friends Bandito and Phantom - as well as his broken-hearted caretakers, Stoney and Valerie.

Suggs was one of a litter of kittens born in the Spring of 2020 to a feral cat colony located in downtown Columbia, SC. While the other kittens remained wary of people, Suggs was an outgoing boy who had an outstanding personality and who demanded to be taken to a forever home… which is what we did…

Suggs took immediately to life at CHOC – many times voicing his opinion from atop the kitchen table. He was so good at it, we were convinced that he was developing language skills! And, while he was generally comfortable in his forever home, he maintained his feral ways and would keep his distance from the humans (unless we could sometimes sneak up to pet him).

Mid-year of 2025, Suggs slowly developed a habit of coughing up hairballs – tho no hairballs could be found. The cough became steadily worse over time – but, because he was adamant about being approached, much less being put in a carrier, it was impossible to take him to a veterinarian. We could do for him only what he would let us do. Ultimately, he became so weakened, he relented and agreed to be transported. X-rays showed multiple abcesses in his lungs – caused by a bacterial infection. He also had fluid buildup in his chest cavity to a point where his heart could not be seen on the x-ray film. There was no logical choice but to let him go…

Suggs was a much-loved cat, whose 6 years with us will always be a joyful memory of his many chatty “conversations”. We know that his life in the feral colony would not have been easy, and we hope he thought he had a better life with a roof over his head, good food, and many companions.

We love you, Suggsie, and we miss you - especially hearing your many verbalizations regarding your lot in life from your perch in the kitchen.

Tom Thumb and the many S&K alumni are waiting to show you all the wonders in store for you on your next journey…

…With love from Stoney and Valerie…
